Nursing Without Borders: Values, Wisdom, Success Markers

By Sharon M. Weinstein, MS, RN, CRNI, FAAN, and Ann Marie Brooks, RN, DNSc, MBA, FAAN, FACHE, FNAP

This book is for all the nurses who have crossed their own borders, or might like to. It provides both visionary lessons and practical advice. It is part history, part business textbook, part travelogue, part how-to, and part inspiration.

Divided into three sections—“Values,” “Wisdom,” and “Success Markers”—Nursing Without Borders reflects the international nursing experiences of a host of nurse leaders representing diverse cultures. These leaders, pioneers in global nursing, paved a path of international partnerships and documented their stories for those considering international work.

In Part I, chapters 1-3, authors address “Values” and share their experiences and expertise, setting the tone for learning. In Part II, chapters 4-6, the authors address “Wisdom” gleaned from the typical challenges, but also from unlikely places. Part III, chapters 7-9, is focused on “Success Markers”, long-term endeavors that have forever changed how major organizations approach and manage global nursing work.

The book ends with three additional sections offering success stories that are further broken out into “Collaboration”, “Practice”, and “Education” success stories. These stories do more than just affirm the premise of the previous nine chapters—they share the trials and tribulations associated with their experiences and offer further wisdom of lessons learned.

Read what nurse leaders are saying about Nursing Without Borders:

“Nurses are resilient, committed, and hungry for updating and improving their nursing education, practice, and administration. This book highlights the success of international work by cultivating nursing leaders. Developing nursing leaders is desperately needed and requires perseverance, courage, and commitment from nurses who provide assistance.”
–Yasmin Amarsi, RN, PhD, The Shakur Jamal Professor of Nursing and Dean, School of Nursing, The Aga Khan University, Karachi, Pakistan

“Both the big-picture concepts—globalization, collaboration, empowerment, sustainabilityand down-to-earth examples bring international partnerships to life in ways that are useful throughout the world. These reports exemplify effective ways to work toward global health and mutual understanding.”
–Sue Thomas Hegyvary, RN, PhD, FAAN, Professor and Dean Emerita, School of Nursing, Adjunct Professor, School of Public Health and Community Medicine, Department of Health Services, Biobehavioral Nursing and Health Systems, University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, USA

“They [the authors] share their values, wisdom, success stories, and lessons learned with us. In this sharing, they illuminate what might be possible if we create and sustain national and international networks. We are, indeed, all one and need to be, as Kathleen Bower suggests, ‘curious very, very curious.’”
–Karen Fletcher, RN, MN, CON(C), Faculty of Nursing, University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada

“This book provides inspiring exemplars of nurses’ ingenuity and leadership in global health. Nurses’ contributions internationally are placed in historical context, and contributions by leaders in nursing practice, administration, and education provide practical advice on how to develop successful international collaborations.”
–Linda H. Aiken, RN, PhD, FAAN, FRCN, The Claire M. Fagin Leadership Professor of Nursing, Professor of Sociology, Director, Center for Health Outcomes and Policy Research, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA

“Anyone who is passionate about nursing and is interested in the global nursing experience should read this book. It is applicable for nursing students, clinical nurses, and nurse educators, and it is a must-read for nurses anticipating their first mission trip or clinical experience away from their home countries. ”
AORN Journal October 2008.

These stories do more than just affirm the premise of the previous chapters –they share the trials and tribulations associated with their experiences and offer further wisdom of lessons learned.
