$2 Million Gift To Improve Health Care Worldwide Via Enhanced Electronic Library for Nursing Information

INDIANAPOLIS – Indianapolis philanthropist Ruth Lilly* has given a $2 million contribution to expand the world’s leading library for nursing research, a library with global access because all of its information is available electronically. By endowing the Ruth Lilly Nursing Informatics Chair at the Indianapolis-based Honor Society of Nursing and expanding the organization’s electronic library collections, Ms. Lilly’s gift will help nurses worldwide get the information they need to conduct research, serve patients and control health care costs. The $2 million contribution from Ms. Lilly is the largest single gift in the 78-year history of the 125,000-member organization.

“This is a historic moment for nursing,” said Dr. Patricia E. Thompson, Honor Society of Nursing president. “The International Nursing Library offers the latest practice and research findings to individuals wherever their locale. Health care professionals and consumers of their care will benefit from this extraordinary investment in nursing.”

Nancy Dickenson-Hazard, Honor Society of Nursing executive officer, added, “Studies have validated that an extensive foundation of scientific knowledge bolsters high quality and cost-effective care. Accordingly, our honor society strives to meet the knowledge requirements of nurses globally. With the most current scientific studies translated into useable applications, nurses are better able to deliver informed, excellent care.”

The Virginia Henderson International Nursing Library, operated by the Honor Society of Nursing, offers:

  • The Online Journal of Knowledge Synthesis for Nursing, a peer-reviewed, full-text electronic journal that compiles and analyzes clinical research.
  • The Registry of Nursing Research, a collection of nursing research data including researchers’ demographic information, studies, projects, abstracts, variables studied and scientific results.
  • The Index of Nursing Research Knowledge, which indexes research knowledge rather than articles, thereby allowing users to go directly to research findings, circumventing cumbersome, traditional bibliographic databases.
